Mumbai is what the Indians affectionately call - the 'City of Dreams'. The name of the city Mumbai, is given by the original inhabitants fisher-folk “Kolis”, they were the worshipers of their deity the Mother Goddess Mumba Devi, and they used to call ii Mumbai. The city had been taken over by various Hindu rulers until 1534 when Portuguese takeover the city and start calling is “Bom Baia” (meaning the good beach). 

They give to Britishers in with the dowry of Catherine of Braganza when she married England’s Charles II in 1661. When the Britishers got it they changed the name and start calling it Bombay.
