Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeast, is situated between the southern bank of mighty  Brahmaputra River and the foothills of the Shillong plateau. Dispur, a part of Guwahati, serves as the capital of Assam state of Northeast India. Guwahati, identified with the ancient Pragjyotishapura, has been a major centre of cultural development in Assam since ages. Guwahati was the capital of the Hindu kingdom of Kamarupa (under the name of Pragjyotisa) about 400 CE. In the 17th century the town repeatedly changed hands between the Muslims and the Ahoms Dynasty.
