About Shimla.

Shimla “the queen of Hill Station” situated in the north-west Himalayas at a height of 7200ft, is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla is surrounded by pine, deodar and oak forests. 

Shimla is derived by a Sanskrit word "Shyamla a synonym of goddess Kali. Shimla was a small sleepy forest village until discovered by the then British officer Charles Kennedy in 1819 and build a rest house. In 1864 Shimla became the official summer capital of British India. 

As the summer capital, Shimla also saw a spate of remarkable building activity in the town and some of the finest structures of the British-colonial genre still stand over its seven hills. The Kalka–Shimla railway was opened in 1906.
