About Gangtok

Gangtok the capital city of Sikkim state, situated at the height of 5,500 ft. in the Shivalik hills. The name of the city Gangtok meaning hill-top, it offers views of Mt. Kanchenjunga height of 28,169ft. the third highest mountain peak in the world. 

Gangtok also known as “The Gateway to Sikkim” is one of the most beautiful hill stations in the country. Gangtok has remain an important town ever since the 17th century. 

However the town was crowned as the capital of Sikkim in 1894 by the then ruling Sikkimese Chogyal, Thutob Namgyal.

 However, the earliest record date that talks about the existence of Gangtok is the year 1716, which happens to be the year of construction of the Hermetic Gangtok Monastery. The main tourist attraction of Gangtok are The Enchey Monastery, the Nathula Pass, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Do Drul Chorten, Ganesh Tok, Hanuman Tok, White Wall, The Ridge Garden, Himalayan Zoo Park, MG Marg, Lal Bazar and the Rumtek Monastery.
