About Kannur.

Kannur, often referred to as the land of lores and looms, is a town in the northern coastal region of Kerala. Sharing its borders with the Western Ghats and Arabian Sea, the region exhibits abundant natural beauty and cultural traditions.

The name Kannur is a mix of two words, Kannan- meaning Lord Krishna and Ur- meaning place, making the literal translation to be ‘The place of Lord Krishna’. The town is famous for its temple festivals where the popular dance form of Theyyam is performed. The earliest evidence of human habitation are rock-cut caves and megalithic burial sites of the Neolithic age.

The district was part of the Chera kingdom, which ruled most of Kerala during the first several centuries CE. Later Kannur was the capital of the Kolattiri Rajas, whose kingdom had trading relations with Arabia and Persiain the 12th century and 13th centuries.

The main tourist attraction of Kannur are Sri Mavilayikkavu Temple, Payyambalam Beach, St. Angelo Fort, Muzhappilangad Beach, Kottiyoor Shiva Temple, Aaralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Parassinikkadavu Snake Park, Arakkal Museum, Kavvayi Islands, Madayipara, Dharmadam island, Baby Beach, Sundareswara Temple, Meenkunnu Beach, Ezhara Beach, Thottada Beach, Mapilla Bay, Mridanga Saileswari Temple and Pallikunnu.
