About Tezpur 

Tezpur situated along the right (north) bank of the mighty Brahmaputra river in the Indian state of Assam. Sitting between the snow-capped mountains of the Eastern Himalayas and verdant hills on the north bank. The ancient city of Tezpur known as the “cultural capital of Assam”. 

Tezpur literally means ‘the city of blood’. As per the ancient history Banasura the king of ancient Tezpur’s daughter Usha fall in love with Anirudha the grandson of Lord Krishna. They married each other without the knowledge of the king. 

When king find out, he imprisoned Aniruddha, which led to the fierce battle with Lord Krishna and the entire city was drenched in human blood, hence the name Tezpur, i.e. ‘the city of blood’. The city has been ruled by local rulers, however city lost its importance during the medieval era till British came in 19thcentury. Gradually it became an important centre of trade and commerce, used as a river port for the surrounding tea gardens and other colonial commercial ventures in the hinterland. 

The main tourist attraction of Tezpur are Nameri National Park, Agnigarh, Bamuni Hills, Chitralekha Udyan, Bhairabi Temple, Cole Park, Kolia Bhomora Setu, Padum Pukhuri, Ketakeshwar Dewal, Ouguri Hills, Mahabhairav Temple, Rudrapada, Nag Shankar Temple, Da-Parbatia and District Museum.
