About Dehradun.

Dehradun, a historic town, is the capital city of Uttarakhand state, northern India. It lies in the northwestern part of the state in the foothills of the Himalayas. As per the ancient history, this place is called Dun, it was part of the region called Kedarkhand.

At the time of Mahabharata Guru Dronacharya the great teacher of Kauravas and Pandavas lived here hence the name of this place was Dronanagari. The present day city has been established by Baba Ram Rai, elder son of the seventh Sikh Guru, Guru Har Rai, who came here in 1675. He settled in the village Dhamawala. Thus the name refers to his 'dera' or camp in the 'Doon' valley, around which the present town gradually developed.  It is revealed by history that for centuries the region formed part of the Garhwal kingdom with some interruption from Rohillas.
