About Shillong
Shillong the beautiful capital of Meghalaya is situated in East Khasi hills not far from the Assam border. Surrounded by rolling hills, Lush-green fields, picturesque landscapes, clouds resting on high mountains, the British fondly dubbed Shillong as the ‘Scotland of the East’.
Formerly a small village, Shillong was made the civil station of the Khasi and Jaintia hills in 1864. Due to its strategic location between the Surma Valley and the Brahmaputra River, Shillong was declared the summer capital of Eastern Bengal and Assam in 1874.
It served as the capital of undivided Assam till Meghalaya was became a separate state in 1972. The main tourist attraction of Shillong are Police Bazaar, Sweet Falls, Ward’s Lake, Lady Hydari Park, Spread Eagle Falls, Laitlum Canyons, Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake and Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures.
