Gorakhpur is a city along the banks of the Rapti river in the Purvanchal region of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh situated in the south of Nepal border. Gorakhpur was an integral part of the erstwhile empires of Maurya, Shunga, Kushana, Gupta and Harsha dynasties. 

According to history, the Tharu king, Mausen of Madan Singh (900-950 A.D.) ruled over Gorakhpur city and the adjoining area. Gorakhpur is one of the sacred pilgrimage center to Nath sect.

The city takes its name from medieval saint Gorakshnath. Gorakhnath Temple is still the seat of the Nath sect situated in the heart of the city. The city is also home to many historic Buddhist sites and the Gita Press, a publisher of Hindu religious texts. 

Apart from Gorakhnath Temple there are several other places to visit are Railway Museum, Arogya Mandir, Archaeological Museum, Gita Press, Commerce Museum, Vir Bahadur Singh Planetarium and Nehru Park.
