Prayagraj stands on the site of ancient Prayag, located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated at the confluence of three rivers- Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati. The meeting point is known as Triveni and is especially sacred to Hindus. The city is also referred as Tirth raj or the King of all pilgrimage centers. The Doaba region, including Prayag was controlled by several empires and dynasties in the ages to come. It became a part of the Mauryan and Gupta Empires of the east and the Kushan Empire of the west before becoming part of the local Kannauj Empire.

When the Muslim rule came, Prayag became a part of the Delhi Sultanate and later been part of British Empire. Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati, the origins of Varanasi are yet unknown. The land of Varanasi has been the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus for ages situated on the banks of the River Ganges in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
